BlogPUBLISHED ON Sunday, January 26, 2025

Koei Tecmo's recent remaster of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black (NG2B) has showcased an innovative approach by utilizing a modified version of Sigma 2 as its foundation. This method involves running NGS2 under the hood, allowing the developers to enhance the game's graphics and performance using Unreal Engine 5, while preserving the core gameplay and mechanics. This strategy not only modernizes the visual experience but also minimizes development risks and costs. Read more on the intricasies that inspired this blog via well known modder: @KoenjiDeck

This remastering technique opens up possibilities for Koei Tecmo to apply a similar approach to their Dead or Alive franchise. By leveraging existing game data and assets from earlier DOA titles, the company could create a truly next-gen remastered version with enhanced graphics and performance, appealing to both longtime fans and new players.

The DOA community has faced challenges in recent years, particularly with the mixed reception of DOA6. Perhaps if they focussed next on a remastered version of one of the beloved titles in the series, such as DOA2 Ultimate or more recently DOA5 Last Round, it could serve as a low-risk strategy to revitalize interest in the series. This move would not only honor the franchise's legacy but also re-engage the community, potentially paving the way for a future installments.

In the current landscape of 3D fighting games, with titles like Tekken 8 and renewed interest in the Virtua Fighter series, a well-executed remaster could position Dead or Alive to reclaim its place in the genre. By adopting the remastering approach demonstrated with NG2B, Koei Tecmo has the opportunity to breathe new life into the DOA franchise, satisfying existing fans and attracting a new audience - whilst giving confidence to investors, that it would be a low-risk stake.
