Overwatch 2’s New Damage Hero Freja: Bounty Hunter with Explosive Precision

Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled Freja, Overwatch 2’s newest Damage Hero, in a high-octane gameplay trailer. The Danish sharpshooter, once celebrated as Overwatch’s top search-and-rescue operative, now prowls the battlefield as a ruthless bounty hunter. Armed with her Revdraw Crossbow and a kit built for aerial dominance, Freja is set to shake up the meta when she launches at the start of Season 16 on April 22, 11:00 AM PT. Players can test her early during a limited-time trial weekend from March 21–24.

Who Is Freja?

Freja’s lore reveals a dramatic shift from hero to mercenary. After Overwatch disbanded, she abandoned her life-saving missions to pursue bounties, chasing targets “for the right price.” Hailing from Denmark, she joins the Damage roster as the 19th hero in the category, blending Nordic resilience with ruthless efficiency.

Abilities and Playstyle: Mobility and Mayhem

Freja’s kit emphasizes verticality, precision, and disruption, making her a threat at range and mid-air:

  • Primary Fire: Revdraw Crossbow
Rapidly fire automatic bolts to pressure enemies at close to mid-range.

  • Secondary Fire: Take Aim
Slow movement to charge a high-speed explosive bolt. Using Quick Dash refreshes this ability, rewarding aggressive repositioning.

  • Ability 1: Quick Dash
Vault in the direction you’re moving, resetting Take Aim for follow-up explosive shots.

  • Ability 2: Updraft
Launch upward with a gust of wind, securing high ground or escaping danger.

  • Ultimate: Bola Shot
Fire an explosive bola that wraps and immobilizes an enemy, pulling nearby foes into the blast—perfect for setting up team wipes.

  • Passive: Bounty Hunting
Every 5 killing blows grants bonus ultimate charge, rewarding skilled play.

Perks and Synergy

Freja’s Damage role passive reduces enemy healing on hit, while her unique perks (unlocked via progression) enhance her lethality:

  • Minor Perks (Level 2):

    • Tracking Bolts: Rapid hits reveal enemies for 4 seconds.

    • Bounty Collection: Eliminations grant ultimate charge (2% for assists, 4% for killing blows).

  • Major Perks (Level 3):

    • Ready to Hunt: Updraft grants a free Quick Dash.

    • Job’s Done: After killing 5 unique enemies, reduce Take Aim cooldown by 20%.

Meta Impact and Availability

Freja’s mobility and burst damage make her ideal for harassing backline supports like Zenyatta or Ana, while her Bola Shot ultimate synergizes with area-denial heroes (e.g., Zarya’s Graviton Surge). However, her reliance on aerial positioning leaves her vulnerable to hitscans like Soldier: 76 or Cassidy.

She’ll be available in both casual and competitive playlists immediately upon release, following the model of recent heroes like Venture.

Trial Weekend and Season 16 Launch

From March 21–24, players can test Freja in all modes. Use this window to master her Updraft-fueled vertical plays and explosive combos before her official Season 16 debut.

Freja’s arrival marks a new era of high-risk, high-reward gameplay. Will you chase the bounty or become the prey?

Overwatch 2 is free to play on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
