Sega has officially announced the development of Virtua Fighter 6, the first mainline entry in the iconic fighting game series since 2006. The game is slated for release in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The announcement was made during The Game Awards 2024, where Sega unveiled a teaser trailer showcasing enhanced graphics and dynamic combat mechanics. A more detailed presentation is scheduled for December 13, 2024, during a Sega Direct event.

"Virtua Fighter" debuted in 1993, pioneering 3D fighting games with its realistic martial arts representation. The series saw consistent releases until "Virtua Fighter 5" in 2006, followed by various updates and spin-offs. The upcoming sixth installment aims to revitalize the franchise for modern audiences.

Fans have eagerly awaited this revival, especially after Sega's recent hints and teases. In October 2024, Sega shared an image featuring "SE6A," leading to speculation about a new Virtua Fighter game. 

"Virtua Fighter 6" as we're calling it - is expected to introduce new characters, stages, and gameplay mechanics, appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers. The game is anticipated to feature robust online modes with rollback netcode and crossplay support, enhancing the competitive experience. 

As the fighting game genre experiences a resurgence with titles like Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, VF6 is poised to reestablish its position in the competitive gaming scene. Sega plans to reveal more information in the coming months, including gameplay details and a release date.
